KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad (Bank Muamalat) and Serunai Commerce Sdn Bhd (Serunai), today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate in Bank Muamalat's Halal Certification programme.

Bank Muamalat's Halal Certification programme is designed to provide guidance and free training courses to entrepreneurs so that they can successfully obtain a halal certificate from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).

Bank Muamalat's chief financial officer Amirul Nasir Abdul Rahim said that through the collaboration, Serunai was appointed as the official consultant for the programme, based on the company's record in guiding participants to successfully obtain a halal certificate.

“Responding to the government's call to make Malaysia the main halal hub, not only in Asia but in the eyes of the world, Bank Muamalat supports efforts to increase the number of halal industry entrepreneurs, on the basis of responsibility as corporate citizens and fardhu kifayah (communal obligation).

“Apart from Jakim, Serunai is also actively working with the state department of Islamic religion in the process of helping programme participants obtain halal certificates," he said when speaking at the MoU signing ceremony here today.

The MoU was signed by Amirul Nasir and Serunai chief executive officer and founder Amnah Shaari,  witnessed by Bank Muamalat president and chief executive officer Khairul Kamaruddin.

Amirul Nasir said as an initial phase, a total of 17 entrepreneurs are currently following the programme, and Bank Muamalat is aiming for 100 entrepreneurs to join.

“This initiative can also open opportunities for entrepreneurs to enter the wider halal market, and increase their income,” he said.

Among the criteria for entrepreneurs selected to participate in the programme are those from asnaf and B40 groups; having a company registered with the Malaysian Companies Commission; a non-bankrupt company; in operation for at least three months; and premises with a valid local authority licence.
