SIBU, April 25 (Bernama) -- University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) is strategically positioning itself on the global stage to attract a more diverse pool of international students.

Its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abd Hamid said the university, owned by the Sarawak government, is targeting students from ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Brunei, Indochina and China.

“Our efforts align closely with UTS Strategic Plan 2024-2030, where we aim to establish UTS as a globally recognised university in the field of technical and professional,” he said at the UTS Appreciation Night 2024 here last night.

Since its inception in 2013, the university has experienced rapid growth, and it is actively recruiting academics and researchers to further solidify its position.

According to Khairuddin, the student population has increased over the past three years, from just over 1,000 to the current 3,200.

He said the number is expected to increase further with the implementation of a free education policy in Sarawak government-owned higher education institutions in 2026, specifically for Sarawakian children.

The event was held to appreciate the support of government agencies, departments, and media organisations, which have been instrumental in propelling the university to its current success.
