KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 (Bernama) -- Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) is set to offer military veterans and soon-to-retire personnel the opportunity to pursue careers in the railway sector, involving communication and safety.

UPNM vice-chancellor, Lt Gen Datuk Mardzuki Muhammad, stated that the project, in collaboration with Asian Rail Academy Sdn Bhd, will commence shortly, targeting the recruitment of 400 retirees before extending the opportunity to soon-to-retire personnel.

"This project aims to train veterans not only for employment locally but also abroad, like in Indonesia, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia, in their existing railway systems.

"I see great potential in this field, but we need to ensure a balanced approach in terms of vocational training qualifications so that they can effectively carry out the assigned tasks," he told Bernama today.

Earlier, on behalf of UPNM, Mardzuki signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Asian Rail Academy Sdn Bhd chief executive officer (CEO), RA Thiagaraja, on the sidelines of the ongoing Asia Defence Services Exhibition (DSA) and National Security Exhibition (NATSEC) 2024.

Mardzuki also signed a LoI between UPNM and Cendana Auto Sdn Bhd, which was represented by its CEO Muhammad Fairuz Abd Razak, aimed at research and innovation collaboration to support the Armed Forces vehicles fleet.

“A lot can be done, such as, exchanging information and knowledge aimed at advancing academic knowledge and also internship,” he added.

Earlier during the event, Mardzuki signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) between UPNM and Huihuang International (M) Sdn Bhd, a student recruitment agency, to facilitate the increase in the enrollment of international students at the university.
