Suspect In Ulu Tiram Police Station Attack Believed To Be Member Of Jemaah Islamiyah - Igp

JOHOR BAHRU, May 17 (Bernama) -- The male suspect who was shot dead in the attack at the Ulu Tiram Police Station here earlier today is believed to be a member of Jemaah Islamiyah.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the police raided the house of the suspect, who was in his 30s, in Ulu Tiram and detained five of his family members, aged between 19 and 62.

"I have also instructed the Special Branch division to track down and identify Jemaah Islamiyah members in this state, estimated to be more than 20 people," he told a press conference at the scene.

Two policemen were killed while another was injured in the 2.45 am incident.

Elaborating on the chronology of the incident, Razarudin said two university students, a 22-year-old male and a 21-year-old female, had earlier visited the police station to seek advice regarding a sexual abuse case that occurred two years ago.

While the students were lodging their report, the suspect on a motorcycle entered the station’s premises and parked at the back of the building.

“One of the policemen went to the back to investigate but was attacked and fatally hacked by the suspect. The suspect then seized the victims’s firearm,” he said.

Razarudin further said that two other policemen who were informed of the attack rushed to the scene and engaged in a shootout with the suspect, resulting in one of them being shot in the cheek, with the bullet penetrating his head, killing him on the spot.

The suspect was also shot dead while another policeman sustained injuries to his left shoulder and hip, he said.

“Our investigation revealed that the suspect had come prepared. His bag, used as a shield, was reinforced with zinc, paper and cloth. He may have come to the station with the intent to obtain firearms for an unknown agenda,” he added.

Razarudin also said that the two university students have been detained for investigation.

“For an incident that happened two years ago, coming at 2 am to seek police advice is indeed illogical. We are investigating and have made the arrests,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
