KUALA TERENGGANU, May 20 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) today disposed of 190 boxes of contraband cigarettes worth over RM1.3 million.

Its director, Maritime Captain Khairul Anuar Abd Majid, said all 1.9 million sticks of white cigarettes were seized in the waters of Besut in April last year.

“The process is done using a grinding machine and will take two days to complete.

“These cigarettes will be disposed of at the Kuala Terengganu City Council waste disposal site in Kuala Nerus tomorrow,” he told a press conference here.

Meanwhile, Khairul Anuar said the Terengganu MMEA has identified a change in the modus operandi of cigarette smuggling syndicates into the state.

“In the past, cigarettes were smuggled in large quantities using three and five-tonne lorries, but now they come in smaller amounts using boats and cars for faster transportation and easier escape during operations,” he said.

He also believed there were islands being used as storage areas for the cigarettes and did not rule out the possibility of local fishermen’s involvement in these activities.
