KUCHING, May 27 (Bernama) -- Recipients of Tabung Kasih@HAWANA like Chia Kan Nyuk, a journalist from See Hua Daily News in Miri, Northern Sarawak, described the donation as most meaningful.

Chia, who has been suffering from breast cancer since July 2023, was visibly moved when she received the donation presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA 2024) celebration here today.

Chia, who has been a journalist for 31 years, said the timely donation will help her immensely in her fight against cancer.

“This donation means a lot to me, it eases my burden in this recovery process,” said Chia, 53, who has found renewed vigour for remission.

Four other recipients of Tabung Kasih@HAWANA 2024 who were former journalists in Sarawak are Thng Joo Hua, 38, Jonathon Bullet Henry Embaya, 56, Tukino Mapol, 67, and Angelina Sinyang, 49.

Thng, who worked at Sin Chiew Daily for 14 years, was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal bone cancer since January in 2022 while Jonathon Bullet, a former photographer with The Borneo Post for 10 years, suffered a stroke in 2021.

Meanwhile, Tukino who is a former Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) cameraman, has been suffering from kidney problems since 2017, after his compulsory retirement.

Angelina Sinyang, former head of Sarawak bureau for Utusan Malaysia before becoming Astro Awani’s Sarawak Coordinator from July, 2019 until March, 2022, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October, 2023.

Last year, the Ministry of Communications through Bernama (Malaysian National News Agency) introduced the Kasih@HAWANA Fund which was mooted to help veteran journalists and media practitioners who are facing health problems and hardship.

Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil, when speaking at the HAWANA Summit today, said so far, a total of 102 people (journalists) have been tracked and will receive help through the fund so that the welfare of media practitioners is protected.
