NEW DELHI, May 28 (Bernama) -- The new 93-member Maldivian parliament, in which President Mohamed Muizzu's party commands a massive majority, was sworn in on Tuesday.

Muizzu's People's National Congress (PNC) won 75 seats in the parliamentary election held in April.

The main opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has 12 members in the legislature.

In the inaugural sitting of the 20th People's Majlis, the PNC's Abdul Raheem Abdulla was elected speaker, while Ahmed Nazim was elected as deputy speaker.

Abdul Raheem earlier served as a special advisor to Muizzu.

He was backed by 71 members in the contest for the speaker's post against his rival Ibrahim Nazil of the MDP, who received 14 votes.
