JOHOR BAHRU, May 30 (Bernama) -- The state government is intensifying efforts to expand its health tourism sector ahead of the Visit Johor Year 2026.

Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the health tourism sector contributed RM143 million to the state's gross domestic product (GDP) last year and it's expected to continue to increase in line with various efforts that are being carried out.

"A special committee has been set up under the tourism exco. The menteri besar and I have met the industry players to boost the health tourism sector,” he told reporters after attending the state-level Nurses Day celebration which was officiated by Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi here today.

Ling said the state's health tourism sector is targeting those from Indonesia, mainly from the Riau Islands.

He added that the menteri besar had also visited Batam, Indonesia recently and met the industry players to discuss ways to further improve the health tourism sector in the state.

"Hopefully by 2026 we will be ready… we can offer more beds for those who want to undergo health checks in Johor,” he said.

Earlier, at the event, Onn Hafiz announced an allocation of RM300,000 to the nurses association in Johor.
