02/06/2024 01:09 PM

NEW DELHI, May 31 (Bernama) -- India's central bank has brought back 100 tonnes of gold from Britain, a report said on Friday.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may be moving a similar quantity of gold from abroad to its domestic vaults in the coming months, the Times of India reported, citing official sources.

India is among the world's major holders of gold reserves along with being the second largest consumer of the precious metal.

The RBI held 822 tonnes of gold at the end of March, of which 413 tonnes were held overseas.

The government in March allowed the RBI to import gold without paying import taxes.
