JAKARTA, June 11 (Bernama) -- Indonesian Defence Minister and president-elect for the 2024-2029 term, Prabowo Subianto, met with King Abdullah II of Jordan in Amman on Monday to discuss humanitarian aid and protection for the people of Gaza.

The meeting was part of Prabowo’s activities representing President Joko Widodo at the “Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza” summit held on Tuesday.

During the meeting, Prabowo highlighted Jordan’s role as one of Indonesia’s most active partners in advocating for the Palestinian people.

“The Indonesian government is closely monitoring the deteriorating situation in Gaza. The number of casualties and injuries continues to rise. Indonesia is deeply concerned about the highly vulnerable conditions of the people in Gaza,” Prabowo said in a statement.

Meanwhile, King Abdullah II expressed his gratitude and respect for Prabowo’s presence in Jordan on behalf of President Jokowi at the Gaza summit.

Both leaders emphasised the importance of international cooperation in coordinating and increasing the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

King Abdullah II underscored the significance of the Gaza summit in uniting efforts to coordinate and enhance humanitarian aid to the region as well as stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the protection of civilians.

The King welcomed Indonesia’s efforts to promote peace in the region and its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Echoing Prabowo’s remarks at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue recently, King Abdullah II also stressed the need for a political horizon to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, according to the statement.
