JAKARTA, June 16 (Bernama) -- Indonesia’s counter-terrorism unit, Densus 88, searched a rented house in Karawang district, West Java province on Saturday following the arrest of a suspected terrorist.

The operation, backed by police from Cikampek and Karawang, involved gathering evidence in Kamojing Barat Village, Cikampek. It started at 8.30 am local time and concluded by midday.

Cikampek Police Chief Commissioner Aries Riyanto in a statement stated on Sunday, “The backup security during the search proceeded smoothly and was conducive.”

The village head, Rawan, identified the suspect as a man in his fifties who has lived in the house since May 12, selling porridge from a motorcycle and keeping to himself with minimal interaction with the neighbours.

The Media Indonesia news portal reported that village officials and the house owner were directly observed during the search.

However, official details from the police regarding the arrest and the items seized, including white and yellow powder from the house occupied by the suspected terrorists, have not yet been released.

In a separate statement, the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) has commended the proactive law enforcement actions of Densus 88 under the National Police, following the arrest of a repeat terrorist offender in Cikampek.

BNPT head Commissioner Mohammed Rycko Amelza Dahniel stated the arrest underscores law enforcement’s commitment to preventing terrorist violence, which poses risks to lives and property.

“This proactive effort by law enforcement aims to safeguard the public from potentially more severe acts of violence,” he added.

According to the National Police spokesperson Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, the suspect is implicated in terrorist activities affiliated with Daesh in Karawang and has previously been convicted of terrorism offences in 2011 and 2018.

In another development, authorities in Bogor, West Java, are investigating a recent explosion at a residential property that caused severe injuries to one person, resulting in the loss of both arms and legs.

The incident, suspected to be triggered by potassium chloride material, occurred in Cibulakan Village, Klapanunggal, around 1.30 pm local time last Wednesday.

Bogor District Police Police Chief Rio Wahyu Anggoro stated that investigations are ongoing, local media Kompas reported.
