ALOR SETAR, June 20 (Bernama) -- Kedah Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) has raided premises suspected of selling liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is a controlled item, without a valid licence in Kepala Batas, Jitra.

Its director, Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin, said the Alor Setar KPDN enforcement officers mounted the raid at 4.45 pm yesterday following public complaints.

He said it was revealed that a 12kg LPG cylinder was sold at RM25 instead of a controlled price of RM22.80 at the premises.

“Further inspection on the premises also found that the licence to sell retail LPG had expired in May,” he said in a statement today.

Muhammad Nizam said the raiding party seized four LPG cylinders worth RM400.

“The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 (Act 122), and if found guilty, the penalty could be up to RM1 million or imprisonment for up to three years or both.

“The case is also being investigated under the Price Control Act and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723) for selling controlled goods above the prescribed price,” he added.

According to him, KPDN also conducted a separate raid on a shophouse in Pokok Sena at 11 am yesterday, where an unauthorised halal logo was used on the labels of beauty products.

“A team of officers from Alor Setar KPDN, together with Halal Management officials of the Kedah Islamic Religious Affairs Department who conducted the raid, found that the premises did not have a halal certificate recognised by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) or state Islamic Religious Council.

“The total estimated seizure value amounted to over RM1 million and the case is being investigated under paragraph (4)(1)(a) of the Trade Descriptions Order (Certification and Marking of Halal) 2011,” he added.
