AUG 2024: MALAYSIAN SHUTTLERS BOOK THEIR TICKETS TO SEVEN SEMIFINALS

SURABAYA, June 30 (Bernama) -- Seven Malaysian shuttlers booked their tickets to the semifinals of the 2024 ASEAN University Games (AUG 2024) badminton competition here today.

In the competition held at the Graha Cakrawala Convention Centre, Universitas Malang, S. Navaratnarajah defeated Singapore’s Wu Joanna Chujia 21-8,21-14 in the women’s singles match that lasted just 27 minutes. 

Navaratnarajah is expected to face an uphill task after drawing Thailand’s Choeikeewong Pornpicha, the number one seed, in tomorrow’s semifinal.

Another national shuttler Ung Yi Xing who also booked a berth in the semifinal after defeating Singapore’s Lee Ashley She Hui 21-12, 21-14, will be facing the number two seed in the competition, Fatetani Aisyah Sativa from the host country, tomorrow.

The country’s progress in badminton continued in the men’s singles competition when Cheong Anson Yen Feng dashed the hopes of the host country’s leading hopeful Eldison Fiery Mufti, 21-16, 19-21, 21-9 after three sets. 

In the semifinal tomorrow, Yen Feng will be up against the tournament’s top seed Pusri Nachakorn from Thailand.

His team mate Hooi Shao Hern enjoyed an easy passage to the next round after defeating Singapore’s Lin Melcom Yang Zhi 21-16, 21-15 but set up a date with Thailand’s Arree Puritat tomorrow.

Apart from the women’s and men’s singles players, mixed doubles pair Wee Yee Hern-Ng Qi Xuan, the second seeds in the competition, moved into the semifinals after edging past Thailand’s Kanjanakeereewo Vichayapong-Korepap Chasinee 24-22, 19-21, 21-11 and will face another Thailand pair, Mangkornloi Neuaduang-Pavonan Atitaya tomorrow.

Following in their footsteps were women’s doubles pair Siow Desiree-Ng Qi Xuan and men’s doubles pair Wong Tien Ci-Liew Xin.

In the women’s doubles match, Siow-Ng who defeated Mahsela Tiara-Putri Windy Aulia from the host country 21-9,21-17 will face Thailand’s Rungruengpramon Pattaraporn-Phatcharaphisut Pichamon in tomorrow’s semifinal.

Tien Ci-Liew Xin face Thailand’s Mangkornloi-Promsarin Paramet.
