SINGAPORE, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Muslim Converts’ Association of Singapore (MCAS) distributed Qurban meat to 700 families, including Malaysians in the republic on Sunday, in the spirit of giving and celebrating the less fortunate on the day of the Islamic New Year, or Awal Muharram.

MCAS president Muhammad Imran Kuna said for the “Gift of Qurban” event this year, each family received two kilogrammes of meat sponsored by Qurban service provider Hezom International, with the main beneficiaries consisting of the “fakir miskin” (the poor and the needy), converts and the elderly.

“We started this in 2016. In 2019, instead of them coming to us, we started delivering the Qurban meat to them.

“However, this year, we have gathered them here not only for the meat distribution but also to have a Briyani lunch together, prepared by Ajmir Briyani and Spice Kitchen using the Qurban meat,” he told Bernama.

Muhammmad Imran said Chef Aizat Haikal of MasterChef Singapore season four has prepared an exclusive video to guide beneficiaries on how to cook Briyani. Ingredients featured in the video were also provided to the beneficiaries.

He said the event allowed members of the association, together with sponsors, volunteers and beneficiaries to have better interactions. It was also a heartfelt gesture to welcome new converts to the MCAS family.

Muhammmad Imran said the MCAS also celebrates Malaysians who have been very supportive of the association’s activities, including the Qurban meat distribution throughout the years.

Retiree Fatimah Jensen, 77, from Ang Mo Kio said she is happy to be part of the event as beneficiaries get to meet people and avoid wastage.

“Last year, when they distributed the meat, I was hospitalised. So, the meat, which they left outside my house, became rotten. I’m glad this year, we are having on-site distribution again,” she said.

MCAS Financial Assistance beneficiary Nordiana Abdullah, 72, said the event makes her think of those less fortunate than her.

“I’m grateful but at the same time, I’m thinking of the people in Palestine. Let us all pray for them,” she said.

MCAS, also known as Darul Arqam Singapore, actively serves to bridge everyone towards a better understanding of Islam.

The non-profit organisation has been appointed as the one-stop centre for conversion services by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore since 2005.
