KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- A non-governmental organisation, Pertubuhan Rabithah Alawiyah Malaysia (RAM),  fully supports the Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024, describing its relevancy in efforts to unite people from diverse backgrounds in the country.

RAM chairman Datuk Syed Hood Syed Edros Al-Aydrus said the Bill seeks to make provisions for muftis, determine matters related to Islamic law and doctrines, among other things and if passed, will apply to the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

“RAM views sections (2) (a)(b) and (c) as well as sections 3(4)(a)(b) dan (c) as highly relevant, where Section 3(2) stipulates that a person qualifies to be a mufti or deputy mufti if they are a Malaysian citizen, a member of the Sunnah Waljamaah (school of thought) and possess expertise in Islamic law.

“Section 3(4) further elaborates the entire Section 3 by stating that the Sunnah Waljamaah member refers to any person who adheres to the Quran and Sunnah on matters related to akidah (creed), Syariah and tasawuf (Sufism),” he said in a statement.

He said RAM hoped that all MPs, especially Muslims, would support the Bill, which is scheduled to be tabled for the second reading in the Dewan Rakyat next week and be passed without amendments during this session.

The Bill, which also details the establishment of several committees such as the Federal Territories Fatwa Committee, Falak Syarie (Islamic astronomy) Committee, Rukyah Hilal (sighting of crescent moon) Committee and Islamic Education Monitoring Committee chaired by the mufti, was tabled for the first reading by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar in the Dewan Rakyat on July 2.
