‘SMOKEHOUSE" USE IN FIRE RESCUE DEMONSTRATION AT EAST ZONE MADANI RAKYAT RPOGRAMME

KUANTAN, July 5 (Bernama) -- Demonstration by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is normally on catching snakes or putting out fires, but this time it is making a difference by featuring a 'smokehouse” at the three-day East Zone 2024 MADANI Rakyat Programme.

The “smokehouse”, located in front of the Pahang Public Library, next to Dataran Sayangi Kuantan,  focuses on fire escape techniques, especially for children.

Most parents do not miss the opportunity to take their children to try out activities held at the smokehouse and try on the uniforms of the firefighters.

Pahang JBPM public relations officer Zulfaidi Zakaria said this kind of exposure on fire escape is important because in most fire cases, victims usually die from suffocation.

"When a fire occurs, hot smoke will rise to the top and cool air and oxygen will be below. When we stand in this condition, it is difficult to breathe and if there is not enough oxygen, we can faint.

“That's why it's important to save ourselves by crawling because the fresh air is below and it's easier to see the way out because it's not filled with smoke. So, this is what we teach at 'smoke house'," he told Bernama here today.

He said that through the “smokehouse” activities, visitors not only get information but also experience a situation of a fire in a small, dark, hot and smoky space.

In this way, they also get to see the firefighting team perform rescue work during fire operations, he said.

Apart from the “smokehouse” activities,  Zulfaidi said there were also demonstrations of rescue operations in road accidents and floods, fire forensics, as well as an exhibition on equipment used by firefighters, innovations and career opportunities.

"JBPM brings various activities to visitors from all age groups, from children to adults,” he said.

The East Zone 2024 MADANI Rakyat Programme is scheduled to be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim tomorrow.
