VIENTIANE, July 10 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- The Lao government has planned to release at least 64 million fish fingerlings and other aquatic species into rivers across Laos in 2024, as part of efforts to boost food security, reported Xinhua.

The plan is a part of celebrating the Lao National Aquatic and Wildlife Day on July 13, according to a report issued by the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry on Wednesday.

As part of this plan, the ministry will release 400,000 fingerlings and other aquatic species into a river in Xaysettha district in Lao capital Vientiane.

It will help business operators and the public realise the importance of fish and other aquatic creatures as a viable sector of the economy, through the generation of income for families and the nation as a whole.

So far, there are more than 1,100 fish conservation zones in Laos, including 890 that are managed by local authorities.
