S’GOR DIRECTS LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO LIST PROJECTS POST-ASSESSMENT TAX INCREASE

SHAH ALAM, July 10 (Bernama) -- Local authorities (PBT) in Selangor have been directed to list five public service projects to be implemented within 100 days once new assessment tax rates take effect.

State Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said this initiative aims to inform taxpayers about the allocation of their payments and to showcase the PBTs’ commitment to enhancing services after raising the assessment tax rate.

“I have asked all PBTs to outline five significant projects for the public that can be completed within 100 days and projects that can be completed within a year.

“These projects relate to public services, such as infrastructure provision, road upgrades or landscaping, so taxpayers know what their local PBTs are doing,” he said during the state assembly sitting here today.

Ng was replying to a supplementary question from Mu’izzuddeen Mahyuddin (PN-Hulu Bernam) on how the proceeds from the increased rates would be utilised.

Ng said the new rate is necessary as some PBTs have to allocate half of their annual budget to ensure the smooth and efficient delivery of public services.

“PBTs face challenges, such as managing solid waste, which incurs high financial costs. Some councils (PBTs) need to independently cover 30 to 50 per cent of the annual budget for collection costs.

“Therefore, I have asked them to outline important projects that offer the greatest benefit to the public so that taxpayers can see the value in their payments,” he said.

It was reported that all 12 local authorities in Selangor are reviewing their assessment tax rates, with the new rates expected to be implemented no later than next year.
