KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s Chef de Mission to the 2024 Olympic Games Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said that track cycling or badminton could deliver the first Olympic gold medal for Malaysia.
This was based on current performance and achievements in the sports in several events and previous Olympics, he said, adding that potential gold medallists include national badminton singles player Lee Zii Jia, national men’s badminton pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and track cycling champion Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang.
"If young athletes in swimming, archery and diving win medals, that would be good for their careers, future Olympic editions and a bonus (but) we need to target a gold medal as a start,” he told reporters after a prayer session for the Malaysian contingent to the 2024 Paris Olympics at the National Sports Council (NSC) here today.
He also urged athletes making their Olympic debut, especially wildcard entries, to try to better their personal records and reminded all athletes to be careful and be safe as they prepare for the Paris Olympics.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced on Tuesday that her ministry would retain the target of winning one gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
