IPOH, July 11 (Bernama) -- The Perak State Legislative Assembly today passed a motion to convene a special conference aimed at addressing the impacts of extreme weather phenomena, climate change, and flash floods on the people in the state.
Speaker Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid said the motion was passed with more votes in favour.
Wong Chai Yi (PH-Simpang Pulai), who put forward the motion, said that a special conference refers to a meeting held outside the usual schedule to discuss urgent matters needing immediate attention.
“A special conference is not a special council meeting, only the Sultan can allow the Perak State Legislative Assembly to convene...when we bring this motion to the House and it is approved, we will have the “authority” from the House to hold this special conference.
“This is my initiative and responsibility as an assemblyman...to find ways to help the people of Perak face the challenges and impact of extreme weather phenomena, climate change and flash floods,” she said in her winding-up speech of the debate on the motion.
Six assemblymen from the opposition bloc and the government participated in the debate session on the motion, yesterday.
Today’s session also passed the motion to establish a Special House Committee to discuss a new enactment or regulations concerning the control of livestock roaming freely on roads in Perak.
Koo Haai Yen (PH-Keranji), when winding-up the debate on the motion, said enacting a new enactment to control livestock from roaming freely on roads would help prevent tragic incidents like fatal accidents from recurring.
“I hope the state government can also provide grants or introduce programmes to assist breeders in implementing modern farming and ensure their livestock no longer (roam the roads),” she said.
The State Assembly sitting then adjourned sine die.
