Sarawak's Education Policy Does Not Focus On Race - Abang Johari

MIRI, July 11 (Bernama) -- Sarawak’s education policy does not differentiate race, but rather provide financial assistance to all schools, so that students can acquire the fundamental knowledge required to transform the state’s economy said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Abang Johari stressed that students must be well-prepared for employment in the new knowledge-based economy, be it from Chinese, public or international schools.

“The education policy does not focus on race. Education does not have race. Knowledge does not recognise race. If we want to be clever, we must study,” he said at the opening ceremony of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJKC) Pei Min at Pei Min Middle School, here today.

The Premier said as Sarawak moves forward towards establishing a new economic path based on advanced technology, Sarawakian children must be equipped with modern knowledge in tandem with the economic transformation, especially in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“Our economy must progress to a higher level so that our students will work in a new economic environment based on knowledge acquired through their efforts later,” he said.

The Sarawak government recognised the United Examination Certificate (UEC) so that they (Sarawakians) can apply for Higher Learning Institutions (IPT) locally if they failed to gain entry to other IPT in Malaysia.

He added that the free education at IPTs owned by the state government which will be effective 2026, would offer extra opportunities for students from Sarawak to pursue higher level education.

Abang Johari hoped Sarawakian children will be taught subjects and courses that will be essential for generating new economy.
