KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 (Bernama) -- The Under-14 (U-14) FC Kuala Lumpur (FCKL) squad have won the Iber Cup Barcelona 2024 when they beat St Johns Wood United 2-1 in the final at Estadio Les Pistes Stadium today.
FCKL fell behind in the final after St Johns Wood United went ahead in the eighth minute through Xavi Esson but Seb Joergensen of FCKL equalised three minutes later with an assist by Iazeel Masanawo de Alwis.
FCKL striker Kalen Hanif Roznain-Brown then managed to take the lead and scored what would turn out to be the winning goal in the 23rd minute.
FCKL coach, Emma Hankins, who has been with the team for three years, praised the players’ fighting spirit in denying the English team to chance to emerge victorious in the final.
"No, it wasn't an easy game. They put up a fantastic fight. They (St Johns Wood United) actually scored first, they let the occasion get to them (after) which they had to adapt to, we were missing something.
"But at half-time, we talked about it again, we just reminded them of their potential. We asked them to focus and win their individual battles and they came out on top. We've reached a new height in this tournament (and) reached a new level (but) we're not satisfied (as) we always want more," she told Bernama today.
FCKL is a youth football academy in Malaysia established in 2009.
