KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) chairman Prof Datuk Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty has been selected honorary member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) effective today.
IKIM director-general Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Azam Mohamed Adil said the selection was announced by IUMS president Sheikh Ali Al-Qaradaghi during the Global MADANI Forum organised by IKIM last Thursday.
He said Muhammad Nur's selection was based on his significant contributions to contemporary Islamic thought, as well as his involvement in local and international dakwah (missionary work).
"He is also a respected scholar with extensive experience in education, thought, philosophy, comparative religion, and management," he said in a statement.
Mohamad Azam expressed hope that this recognition would strengthen the cooperation between IKIM, Malaysia and the global network of scholars in efforts to build a moderate Islamic approach (manhaj) towards creating 'khayra ummah' (the best community).
For the record, Muhammad Nur is the second scholar to be recognised as an honorary member of IUMS after Sheikh Raed Salah Abu Shakra from Palestine.
