WAN AHMAD FAYHSAL'S SUSPENSION FROM PARLIAMENT IS APPROPRIATE - HARAPAN YOUTH

19/07/2024 05:34 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 (Bernama) -- The six-month suspension imposed on Machang Member of Parliament (MP) Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal is a fair punishment for his unprofessional and unethical conduct in the Dewan Rakyat, said Harapan Youth information chief Ammar Atan.

He said Wan Ahmad Fayhsal's actions could also be considered as contempt of Parliament, which is under the auspices of the Conference of Rulers, and creating disrespect towards public servants.

The Amanah Youth vice-chief said Wan Ahmad Fayhsal should have been mature and acted with integrity by quoting reliable sources instead of relying on a poison-pen letter in parliamentary debates and making wild accusations against a civil servant.

“The fact is that he could not prove the authenticity of the information stated in the poison-pen letter, which was clearly slander and incitement to discredit the country's public servants,” he said in a statement today.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul yesterday announced the suspension of Wan Ahmad Fayhsal for citing the poison-pen letter, which allegedly revealed the mastermind behind the takeover of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

The decision was made after a motion to suspend Wan Ahmad Fayhsal from the House and Select Committee meetings received the support of 110 MPs while 63 opposed it through a bloc vote. Three MPs did not vote and 46 were absent.

Ammar said this was not the first time an MP from Perikatan Nasional (PN) had violated parliamentary ethics.

He said that last February, Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, a supreme council member of Bersatu, was almost suspended from Parliament for six months for making baseless allegations that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was corrupt and had abused his power.

The motion to suspend Wan Saiful was withdrawn after he apologised for his action.

“Therefore, Harapan Youth advises Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Bersatu to conduct special programmes to educate their MPs to act with integrity and not slander during debates in the Dewan Rakyat. Enough of spreading slander,” said Ammar.
