LABUAN UNVEILS ‘5S’ STRATEGY TO ELEVATE TOURISM EXPERIENCE

LABUAN, July 19 (Bernama) -- Labuan, which is styling itself as the Pearl of Borneo, plans to captivate tourists with its 5S tourism strategy, which is aimed at highlighting the island's natural and cultural treasures. 

Labuan Corporation (LC) chief executive officer Rithuan Ismail said the 5S approach focuses on five key elements - Sun, Sand, Seafood, Sport Tourism, Shopping and Services - each offering a distinct and enriching experience for visitors.

“Labuan offers enchanting sunrises and sunsets that create picturesque moments, attracting both amateur and professional photographers and its strategic location provides unobstructed horizon views, making it ideal for those who cherish the serenity and beauty of dawn and dusk in one place,” he said in an interview with Bernama today. 

Popular spots like Sungai Miri Beach, Peace Park, and Surrender Point at Layang-Layangan Beach offer spectacular vantage points for these natural light shows, he said, adding that the island’s pristine beaches were perfect for relaxation and recreation.

Visitors are also able to enjoy recreational diving and snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters off Rusukan Besar Island, Rusukan Kecil Island and Papan Island, he shared.

“A trip to Labuan would be incomplete without savouring its fresh and reasonably priced seafood, as the island is renowned for its abundant and delicious seafood offerings, which are a staple of local cuisine,” Rithuan pointed out.

He also noted that Labuan was making waves in the arena of sport tourism with its prestigious annual international sea challenge and renowned golf tournaments. 

“The Labuan International Sea Challenge (LISC), featuring events like deep-sea fishing, kayaking, and cross-channel swimming, draws participants and spectators from around the globe,” he said, while shopping is a great experience in the duty-free island, which offers a diverse mix of local and imported chocolates and textiles. 

The implementation of the 5S strategy is a testament to Labuan’s commitment to enhancing its tourism sector. 

By capitalising on its natural beauty, sporting events, shopping variety, and culinary delights, the island aims to attract a diverse array of tourists and establish itself as a premier destination in the region.
