23/07/2024 01:19 PM

NEW DELHI, July 23 (Bernama) -- An Indian navy ship was damaged in a fire while it was undergoing refit at a naval dockyard in Mumbai.

The fire onboard the multi-role frigate Brahmaputra broke out on Sunday evening and was brought under control by Monday morning, the Ministry of Defence said.

However, the ship later experienced "severe listing" on its port side.

"Despite all efforts, the ship could not be brought to the upright position. The ship continued to list further alongside her berth and is presently resting on one side," the ministry said in a statement.

"All personnel have been accounted for except one junior sailor, for whom the search is in progress. An inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Navy to investigate the matter," it added.

The indigenously built guided missile frigate was commissioned in April 2000.

Manned by a crew of 40 officers and 330 sailors, the INS Brahmaputra has a displacement of 5,300 tonnes, a length of 125 metres, and a beam of 14.5 metres.

In 2016, the INS Betwa, a Brahmaputra-class frigate, slipped on the dock blocks while undergoing refit in Mumbai.

In another major mishap in Mumbai, the Russian-built submarine INS Sindhurakshak sank with 18 crew members on board after an explosion in 2013.
