STUDENTS OVEROME LAZINESS, MAKE EXTRA EFFORT TO EMERGE STPM TOP SCORERS

23/07/2024 09:59 PM

KUCHING, July 23 (Bernama) -- “As you sow, so shall you reap,” said Alya Athirah Asfia, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Green Road here, who scored a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.00 in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) 2023 examination.

Nearly giving up in the second semester, Alya bounced back by changing her mindset and pushing herself to study by burning the midnight oil.

“The key to (my) success is forcing myself to study every day even when laziness crept in. I’m honestly surprised to have obtained a CGPA of 4.00 because my target was only 3.5,” she told reporters after the announcement of STPM results at the Sarawak Education Department here today.

Alya said she intends to pursue a degree in history at Universiti Malaya.

Her schoolmate, Bryan Tan Jun Liang, who also scored the perfect score, shared that the Communicative Malay Literature subject was his main obstacle throughout his studies, adding that he had to put in extra effort to ace the subject.

“If I didn’t understand something, I would consult the teacher until I fully understood the topic. My efforts finally paid off in the third semester with fairly good results,” he said.

He said he would like to study finance, adding that Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) is his top choice.

Sarawak Director of Education Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad announced that 88 Sarawak candidates scored a CGPA of 4.00, while 1,190 candidates attained a CGPA of between 3.00 and 3.99.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Nazif Adham Ahmadie, who has a physical disability, received the top scorer award after obtaining a CGPA of 4.00 in a ceremony organised by the Malaysian Examinations Council (MPM) here.
