Gop Bid To Stop Harris From Getting Biden's Campaign Funds Unlikely To Succeed: Expert

WASHINGTON, July 26 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- The Republican challenge against the transfer of US President Joe Biden’s campaign funds to the new presumptive Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, is unlikely to work, Stephen Presser, the Raoul Berger professor of legal history emeritus at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, told Sputnik.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday, arguing that the transfer of funds raised for Biden's reelection bid to Vice President Harris would violate federal law.

"All donations to Joe Biden could probably be construed as donations to the Biden/Harris ticket, and Kamala is what remains of that. There may be some formal legal action that needs to be done, but I can’t imagine that's too difficult," Presser said.

The legal expert said that any challenge from the Republicans was unlikely to succeed since "a court is likely to find that they lack standing to challenge what is really an inter-party affair for the Democrats". He noted that Harris' access to Biden's campaign funds was likely what made her the preferred candidate of the Democratic establishment.

Last Sunday, Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 US presidential race and endorsed Harris to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for US president. Trump said more than once that it would be easier to defeat Harris, while his campaign said she would make a worse president than Biden.
