MySel to assist S'gor residents with Id issues, not for registering foreigners as citizens - Amirudin

SHAH ALAM, July 29 (Bernama) -- Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has denied that the MySel Identity Document Centre Programme (MySel) is being used to register foreigners as citizens, particularly as residents of Selangor.

He said that MySel, established in 2018, was not intended to take over the role of the National Registration Department (JPN), and that it aimed to assist Selangor residents facing difficulties in obtaining identification documents.

"Some have criticised and harboured negative suspicions, alleging that the state government's initiative through MySel is to register outsiders as citizens and residents of Selangor.

"The state government established MySel not to take over the duties of JPN or to carry out activities beyond its authority or against the law. The facilitation process ultimately requires JPN as the authoritative body for verification," he said during the MySel document presentation ceremony here today.

The event, also attended by State Human Resources and Poverty Eradication Committee chairman V Papparaidu, saw Amirudin handing out identification cards to 30 recipients from various ethnic backgrounds.

Amirudin said that to date, the MySel programme had resolved over 2,000 cases related to identity documents out of more than 6,000 applications received, with the highest approval rate for the Malays, at 48 per cent, followed by other ethnic groups.

He said the statistics refuted claims that MySel approvals were predominantly given to non-Malays, demonstrating that identity document registration issues affected all citizens, not specific races or religions.

Amirudin noted that factors contributing to these issues included the social and economic challenges of parents or guardians, family issues such as marriage registration, language or communication barriers, and complicated documentation processes, such as requiring deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sample verification.

"The government, through MySel, will strive to resolve all applications to ensure that those involved do not miss out on any programmes, assistance, or initiatives provided by the state government, as every related process requires valid identity documents before proceeding," he said.
