PARIS, July 31 (Bernama-MAP) -- French President Emmanuel Macron has officially informed Moroccan King Mohammed VI that he supports the view that the present and future of Western Sahara should be within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.

In a message coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Throne Day, Macron reaffirmed France's unwavering stance on this national security issue for Morocco.

He emphasised that France intends to align with this position nationally and internationally, the Moroccan national news agency (MAP) quoted the Royal Office on Tuesday.

“For France, autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this issue shall be resolved.

“Our support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 is clear and unwavering,” Macron said, calling the plan the only basis for achieving a just, lasting, and negotiated political solution.

Macron noted an emerging international consensus regarding the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty, stressing that France fully participates in all relevant forums, particularly through its support for the efforts of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy.

He urged all parties to come together for a political settlement.

Commending Morocco’s efforts to promote economic and social development in the Moroccan Sahara, Macron is committed to ensuring that France will support these endeavours to benefit local populations.

This announcement from France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, marks a significant step in supporting Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.

It aligns with the momentum spurred by King Mohammed VI and supported by numerous countries worldwide.

Macron’s message highlights the importance of the autonomy plan as the exclusive framework for resolving the regional dispute, advocating for Morocco's territorial integrity.

The Royal Office stated that this support reaffirms the strong bilateral relationship between France and Morocco and underscores France's commitment to regional stability and development.
