ROME, Aug 2 (Bernama-dpa) -- State-owned Italian airline ITA Airways on Thursday announced it suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv until Tuesday, citing the situation in the Middle East, reported the German news agency (dpa).
"Due to the geopolitical developments in the Middle East and to ensure the safety of its passengers and crews, ITA Airways has decided to suspend flights to and from Tel Aviv from August 1 until August 6," the flagship airline said in a brief statement on its website.
"The situation is constantly evolving," it added.
The German airline Lufthansa also cancelled its flights to Beirut and Tel Aviv for the coming days due to the increasing tensions between Israel and Iran.
Lufthansa's flights to Beirut have been cancelled up to and including August 12. Flights to Tel Aviv will be suspended until August 8.
The killing of two important opponents of Israel in recent days has triggered an escalation of tensions in the Middle East. One of the attacks, for which Iran blames Israel, took place in Tehran. The Iranian leadership has threatened to retaliate.
