Assassination Of Ismail Haniyeh: Palestinian Unity Strengthened Amid Challenges

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- The future of Palestinians after the assassination of top Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh may be fraught with challenges, but nonetheless such tragic incidents often unite the Palestinian people and bolster their resolve and determination in their fight for freedom and independence.

Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia Walid Abu Ali said Haniyeh's leadership, particularly as the chief of Hamas Political Bureau, has been pivotal in shaping the resistance and political strategy of the Palestinian movement.

“Looking ahead, the future of Palestinians after this tragic event remains fraught with challenges. However, such incidents often serve to unify the Palestinian people, strengthening their resolve and determination to continue their struggle for freedom and independence,” he said.

Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran in the early hours of Wednesday, July 31. He was in the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Appearing on the Bernama World programme on Friday, Walid said the assassination of Haniyeh underscored the intense and ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, and condemned what he described as Israeli genocide against Palestinians.

He reported nearly 40,000 murders, 15,000 detentions, and over 90,000 injuries among Palestinians as the conflict continues.

Amid the ongoing violence, Walid called on the global powers and international community to exert greater pressure on Israel to halt its actions, and play a stronger role in ending the violence and alleviating the suffering of innocent Palestinians.

“The international community's response will be crucial in addressing the broader implications of these acts and in working towards a resolution that upholds justice and peace,” he said.

In urging immediate and robust international action, Walid said : “"Ensuring a framework where genuine peace and justice can be achieved is indispensable for any progress towards lasting peace."

He also underlined the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict, such as occupation, settlements, and the right to self-determination for Palestinians.

Walid stressed the significance of internal reconciliation, noting that unity is crucial for Palestinians, especially in these critical times.

"No one wins from internal conflict except Israel," he said.
