PM Anwar, Srettha To Visit Rantau Panjang-Sungai Golok Bridge Upgrading Project Saturday

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Thai counterpart, Srettha Thavisin, will undertake a working visit to Sungai Golok, Thailand, and Rantau Panjang, Malaysia, on Aug 3 (Saturday) to evaluate the progress of the Rantau Panjang-Sungai Golok bridge upgrading project.

The Malaysian Foreign Ministry in a statement said such project is one of the main border connectivity initiatives between the two countries.

“Both Prime Ministers will also have a bilateral meeting to deliberate on key bilateral issues, including Malaysia-Thailand land boundary matters, connectivity initiatives to advance socioeconomic development in border areas and the Southern Thailand Peace Dialogue Process,” the statement read.

According to the statement, the visit builds on the momentum of both leaders’ previous engagement in Sadao, Thailand in November last year, reaffirming Malaysia and Thailand’s commitment to promoting people to people ties and enhancing economic activities along the northern Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand regions.

Anwar  will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Menteri Besar of Kelantan Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.

In 2023, Thailand was Malaysia’s sixth largest trading partner globally and second largest among ASEAN Member States, with total trade valued at US$24.83 billion (RM113.16 billion).
