PM Anwar Monitors Progress Of Sungai Kelantan River Basin Project

KOTA BHARU, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited the Sungai Kelantan Phase 1 Integrated River Basin Development Project site in Tunjung here, today.

Anwar arrived in Tunjung at 3.50 pm, accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.

He was welcomed by Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) director-general Datuk Dr Ahmad Anuar Othman and the department’s senior management.

The Prime Minister was also briefed by Ahmad Anuar on the progress of the river basin development project, expected to be completed by 2025.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Anuar said that the Sungai Kelantan Phase 1 Integrated River Basin Project at the site had reached 94 per cent completion.

He said that Phase 1 of the project cost RM699 million, while Phase 2 involves a cost of RM1.064 billion.

"This project will reduce flooding problems and benefit 95,000 people affected by floods," he told reporters after Anwar concluded his visit to the site.

Ahmad Anuar also hoped the project would bring new hope once Bandar Baru Tunjong was fully developed and flash flood issues were eliminated.

According to Ahmad Anuar, the project involves water flowing from Sungai Seribong to Sungai Pengkalan Datu, and subsequently to the sea.

He noted that Phase 1 of the project, which began in 2018, covered 81 hectares and was expected to be completed by July next year, but that it could finish earlier despite delays caused by the COVID-19 Movement Control Order and land acquisition issues.
