PARIS, Aug 7 (Bernama-dpa) -- Cuban Greco-Roman wrestler Mijain Lopez has etched his name in Olympic history by becoming the first athlete to win the same individual event at five consecutive Games, according to the German press agency (dpa).

Lopez, aged 41, secured the gold medal in the 130-kilogramme division by defeating Chile's Yasmani Acosta Fernandez with a score of 6-0.

The five-time world champion participated in his sixth Olympic Games, having debuted with a fifth-place finish in Athens in 2004.

Lopez claimed his first gold in the 120-kilogramme class at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, repeated his success in London 2012, and continued his dominance when the top weight class was raised to 130 kilogrammes, winning gold in Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and now in Paris 2024.

With this achievement, Lopez surpasses several athletes who have won four gold medals in a single event, including American discus thrower Al Oerter, long jumper Carl Lewis, and swimmers Michael Phelps (200m butterfly) and Katie Ledecky, who joined the elite group with her fourth 800m freestyle gold on Saturday.
