NEW DELHI, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Economist Muhammad Yunus, a longtime critic of the ousted premier Sheikh Hasina, will lead Bangladesh's interim government.

The decision was taken in a meeting of President Mohammed Shahabuddin with chiefs of the three services and coordinators of the Students Against Discrimination movement on Tuesday (Aug 6), the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency reported.

Other members of the caretaker government will be named in consultation with various political parties.

Yunus, 84, is known as the "banker to the poorest of the poor" for his pioneering work in microcredit through Grameen Bank.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his efforts to help poor people.

The Bangladesh president also dissolved the national parliament, known as the Jatiya Sangsad, on Tuesday.

The 12th Jatiya Sangsad was formed following the controversial national election won by Hasina's Awami League in January this year.

Hasina resigned and fled to India on Monday (Aug 5) as mass protests against her rule grew.
