Quantum technology new challenge to national cyber security

07/08/2024 06:19 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Quantum technology that can handle data encryption in under five minutes compared to years using normal computers will be the new challenge for the national cyber security sector.

The threat of quantum computing technology, which is expected to mature in the next five years, will require the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) to prepare to face such a challenge, MAF Cyber and Electromagnetic Defence director-general, Rear Admiral Datuk Mohd Fadzli Kamal Mohd Mohaldin said.

He added that quantum technology had its own pros and cons.

“The good is that this technology will speed up computing but the same technology can be used to break encrypted data contained in applications like Whatsapp in just a few minutes.

“In our current national defence, we use close networks to share defence and security information,” he told Bernama here today, adding that the MAF was ready for the presence of the technology and was preparing to tackle any threat if it was used maliciously.

Mohd Fadzli Kamal said a large amount of funds and a sustainable organisation were required to create expertise in quantum technology.

“It's not about one individual (who) can use the quantum technology. It can be said that the technology is still at its infancy, but all countries consider the threat related to this technology and we need to take precautionary measures.

“In Malaysia, I’m told there is a university that has begun research and developed a quantum technology faculty and the armed forces is also shoring up its cyber capabilities,” he said.

The MAF has also taken the initiative to collaborate at the ASEAN and ASEAN Plus level, involving China, Russia, the United States and Australia in cyber security matters, he added.

“We also work with the private sector as they will compete in the business sector. So, they surely do not want to be left behind in the development of such a technology, especially quantum technology,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with TM Technology Services Sdn Bhd for a contract worth RM34.58 million for the preparation of network infrastructure complete with security operation centre facilities today.

Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, who witnessed the signing, said the effort was vital to strengthen national cyber security infrastructure, encourage best practices and strengthen national cyber resilience.
