NEW DELHI, Aug 7 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified Wednesday hours before her finals in the women's 50kg freestyle match at the Paris Olympics, officials said.

According to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Phogat was disqualified for being overweight, Xinhua reported.

She was all set to take on Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal.

"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women's Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning," IOA in a statement said.

"No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh's privacy."

Phoghat was found to be overweight by 100 grams during the weigh-in on Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday night Phogat defeated World and Olympic 50kg champion Yui Susaki in the opening round. She then got the better of Oksana Livach of Ukraine, before beating Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba in the semifinal, on her way to become India's first woman wrestler to reach the Olympics final.
