08/08/2024 04:03 PM

SEPANG, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- AirAsia has increased its domestic and international flight frequencies, now operating 3,281 weekly flights across 10 ASEAN countries to bolster tourism and economic growth in the region.

AirAsia Malaysia managing director, Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra, announced the expansion during the 57th ASEAN Day celebration.

"AirAsia Malaysia will operate 45 per cent of these weekly flights to ASEAN countries, covering 78 routes until the end of 2024," he said at the event, held in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry.

In 2023, AirAsia Group carried over 61 million passengers, with more than 33 per cent travelling within ASEAN.

"Over the years, the airline has been a transformative force in ASEAN, democratising air travel for millions.

"We have unveiled both well-trodden paths and hidden gems of the region's tourism market, with about 60 per cent of our destinations being new and unique," said Fareh.

Fareh said this year's ASEAN Day theme, "Connected and Resilient Community," resonates with AirAsia's mission to connect the 10 ASEAN countries.

He said AirAsia will resume its Kuala Lumpur to Da Lat, Vietnam route, with four weekly flights starting Nov 1, 2024.

Known for its cool climate, beautiful landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, Da Lat is a key part of AirAsia’s strategy to strengthen its network and offer affordable travel options within ASEAN.

"The increased frequencies and resumed routes are expected to significantly boost tourism by providing more travel options and flexibility, leading to higher tourist arrivals, increased spending in local businesses and job creation in the tourism sector," Fareh added.

At the event, AirAsia MOVE signed a collaboration agreement with the ASEAN Tourism Association, solidifying its support through endorsements, member association outreach, and cooperation with ASEAN National Tourism Organisations for the ASEAN Explorer Pass, AirAsia MOVE’s signature travel subscription product.
