UEM Sunrise Celebrates World Nature Conservation Day Via 'Waste To Wonder' Programme

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- UEM Sunrise Berhad, in celebration of World Nature Conservation Day, recently held its 'Waste to Wonder' community programme aimed at inspiring and  encouraging the community to adopt sustainable waste management practices through innovative and creative methods.

This programme contributes to environmental conservation by promoting effective waste management and raising awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources and ecosystems.

According to a company statement, the programme, which featured two series of events, is aligned with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG-12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG-13 (Climate Action).

UEM Sunrise collaborated with social enterprises -- business entities registered under the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development (KUSKOP) -- to create positive social and environmental impacts through the programme.

Its chief executive officer, Sufian Abdullah, said the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility, reflects its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives.

“We strive to cultivate a culture of sustainability from a young age and believe that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to the greater cause of nature conservation and positively impacts the communities we serve,” Sufian said.

The first event, “Know Your Edibles,” took place on July 24 at Kiara Bay in Kepong here. This event, a collaboration with social enterprise Knowledge New Old Twists (KNOTs), involved students from two PINTAR-adopted schools, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Rinching Hilir and SK Bangi.

Students aged 10 to 12 participated in hands-on learning about planting, composting techniques and maintaining an edible garden.

The second event, “Waste to Wonder Hunt,” was on July 28 at Publika Shopping Gallery here.

Social enterprise partners, including Hara Makers, KITARAN, Kitarefill, Refiller Mobile, Luzou, and UEM Sunrise’s own SIREH Park, demonstrated sustainable activities and methods for converting waste into valuable resources.

Participants were excited to learn about these practices and were rewarded with edible garden products from Eats, Shoots & Roots for growing their own food at home.

KITARAN co-founder Emir Bustami, expressing enthusiasm about the collaboration, said, “We are thrilled to partner with other social enterprises in this initiative.

“It provides an opportunity to educate the community about transforming waste into reusable items and enhancing the value of existing products. Such efforts are crucial for the preservation of the natural environment,” he added.
