NEW DELHI, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Pakistan on Friday congratulated Bangladesh's interim government and said it looked forward to working with it to deepen bilateral relations.

Muhammad Yunus, an 84-year-old economist and the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, was sworn in as chief advisor, a position equivalent to prime minister, of the 17-member caretaker administration in Dhaka on Thursday evening.

"Heartiest felicitations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on his swearing-in as Chief Adviser of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Wishing him great success in guiding Bangladesh towards a harmonious and prosperous future," Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said.

"I look forward to working with him to deepen cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh in the days ahead," he added.

Pakistan's deputy prime minister and foreign minister Ishaq Dar congratulated advisor Md. Touhid Hossain, who will head Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The portfolios of interim government members were announced on Friday.

Yunus will handle 27 ministries and departments, including the defence ministry, armed forces division, and the ministries of education, transport, aviation, food, housing, energy and commerce, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency report.

The Home Ministry has been given to retired brigadier general, M. Sakhawat Hossain.
