Volkswagen Delays Trinity Electric Vehicle Production Until 2030

14/08/2024 12:25 PM

Hanover, Germany, Aug 14 (Bernama-dpa) -- Volkswagen has pushed back the production launch of its Trinity electric vehicle to as late as 2030, reported German news agency dpa quoting sources.

The vehicle was initially expected to debut in 2026, but the timeline has now been extended.

However, the chief executive of the Volkswagen Group, Oliver Blume, previously postponed the date by at least a year and a half to allow more time for software development, as reported by the Handelsblatt newspaper.

The reasons for the delays are likely the weakening demand for electric cars and cost-cutting measures at Volkswagen.

The group's profit fell by 4 per cent to €3.63 billion (US$3.99 billion) in the second quarter of 2024.

Earlier this month, Blume said: "It's about costs, costs and costs - especially for the Volkswagen brand but also for all other brands."

Trinity was the flagship project of former Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess, who wanted the car to be built in a dedicated plant at the company's headquarters in Wolfsburg, northern Germany.

However, the model is now to be produced in the south-eastern city of Zwickau, the company's site for electric vehicle production.
