KUCHING, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Satria and Satrina, the names given to the two mascots of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024, have become among nearly 100 types of special merchandise that have been hotly received at the national sports carnival that is being held in Sarawak.

The mascots, designed as a pair of hornbills, with the male named Satria and the female Satrina, are featured in the form of plush toys, printed on t-shirts, or presented as keychains and other items produced by local company, Keris Sakti Group, the official partner of the Games.

Keris Sakti Chief Executive Officer, Sahrul Izam Ahmad said that besides clothing featuring the colours of the Sarawak flag, the printing and graphic design company also produced t-shirt designs with the images of the SUKMA mascots, Satria and Satrina, for all 37 sports featured in the Games.

“For this edition of SUKMA, we have increased the variety of t-shirts because they are one of the most anticipated souvenirs for buyers, so we got the idea to design t-shirts with the SUKMA mascots themed according to each sport, and it has been well received.

“We are also offering fully-designed face towels with the SUKMA theme and logo... we are offering attractive prices for all these official items, as agreed by the SUKMA secretariat,” he told Bernama.

Besides placing orders online via Facebook and WhatsApp or purchasing directly at the Keris Sakti headquarters in Matang near here, the public can buy these items at the SUKMA Carnival held at 15 sports venues across nine divisions in Sarawak.

“We will open booths at all 15 SUKMA Carnival locations across nine divisions in Sarawak, so we will be selling our merchandise to the public, especially those living far from Kuching,” he said, adding that other items featured include jackets, keychains, caps, tumblers, and stationery.

SUKMA 2024, which runs until Aug 24, is being held at locations including Dataran Perayaan Petra Jaya, Serian Convention Centre, Sri Aman Sports Complex Indoor Stadium, Bintulu Stadium, Miri Stadium, and Mukah Stadium.

With one branch each in Satok, Kuching, and Shah Alam, Selangor, Sahrul Izam, who is also the company’s owner, said they have received over 2,000 online orders from customers in Sarawak alone.

“This does not include customers from Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, as most of them make purchases via walk-ins, including state athletes and others,” said Sahrul, who employs nearly 80 workers across all branches and Keris Sakti’s factory.

The Kuching native said five percent of the total sales from all SUKMA 2024 merchandise will be channeled to the state government as a sign of strategic cooperation.

SUKMA 2024 features 37 sports with 488 events comprising 236 men's events, 217 women's events, and 35 mixed men's and women's events. The Games are expected to bring together 12,619 athletes and officials.

First introduced in 1986, SUKMA has been hosted in Sarawak twice before, in 1990 and 2016.
