GUA MUSANG, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Despite battling chronic illness, two elderly residents of Kampung Jeram Tekoh made a determined effort to fulfill their civic duty during the Nenggiri state by-election today.
Both voters cast their ballots from their beds, which were carried by Election Commission workers to Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Jeram Tekoh.
They arrived in an ambulance provided free of charge by a non-governmental organisation.
“I travelled over 150 kilometres from Labok, Machang by car with my son yesterday and arrived at the polling centre in an ambulance at 11.30 am today,” said Wan Ropiah Ishak, 71.
Wan Ropiah said she suffers from chronic kidney disease and recently had her left leg amputated due to diabetes.
Aziz Mat Isa, 63, also displayed incredible perseverance. Stricken with stage five chronic kidney disease, he was transported to the polling centre at 8.50 am by the same ambulance service.
Aziz completed the process in ten minutes with the help of EC staff.
The Nenggiri by-election is seeing a one-on-one contest between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani representing the Unity Government and PAS candidate Mohd Rizwadi Ismail representing Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Nenggiri has 20,259 registered voters, with 2,491 of them being senior citizens.
