GUA MUSANG, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Voter turnout for the Nenggiri by-election has reached 71.87 per cent as of 4 this afternoon, surpassing the Election Commission’s (EC) expectation of 60 per cent and the 61.09 per cent recorded in the 15th State Election in August last year.

As of 4 pm, six of the 20 polling centres had already closed, with the remaining 14 set to close at 6 pm.

Earlier, four polling centres closed at 2 pm, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tohoi, Pusat Komuniti Pendidikan Pos Gob, SK Sri Permai, and SK Kuala Sungai, while two more centres closed at 3 pm, namely Dewan Orang Ramai Pos Simpor and SK Pulat.

It was previously reported that the EC expected the full results of the by-election to be announced as early as 9 pm at the official vote tallying centre at Dewan Perdana, Perdana Complex, Gua Musang District Council.

Today's voting process involved 20,216 ordinary voters out of 20,259 registered, with 43 postal ballots issued earlier for individuals on duty during the by-election, including police personnel.

The by-election today witnessed a straight fight between Barisan Nasional candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, who represented the Unity Government, and Perikatan Nasional’s Mohd Rizwadi Ismail, who contested under the PAS logo.
