17/08/2024 07:00 PM

KINABATANGAN, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The Council for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) will be established by early next year in Sabah, says Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Ariffin Mohd Arif.

He said the establishment of the council was important to empower the implementation of the TVET programme and fields related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the state.

“At the moment we (the ministry) are preparing papers to submit to the state cabinet so that Sabah will have a Sabah State TVET Council by the beginning of next year.

“We already have a Sabah State Science Committee, and we will drive these two committees to empower TVET and STEM in the state,” he said after completing the inauguration of the Sabah state-level STEM and TVET Education Fair here, today.

Mohd Ariffin said the Sabah TVET Council would be composed of representatives from the Sabah State Education Department, Sabah Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Universiti Malaysia Sabah as well as eminent figures and experts in TVET.

“I have had a discussion with the Chief Minister (Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor) about this matter,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ariffin said the Sabah Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, as well as the Sabah Education Department, were serious about taking a collaborative approach with strategic partners to attract students' interest to realise the (MOE) Ministry of Education’s target.

“The MOE's target is to achieve a 60:40 ratio of science students compared to literature or social science at school and higher education institutions, and Sabah is in line with the MOE's target,” he added.

Meanwhile, he hoped that the STEM and TVET Education Fair would be an eye-opener to all schools to promote and implement the uniqueness of the STEM and TVET fields holistically by holding programmes related to science and TVET that were unique and easy to understand for students.
