KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- UMNO Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has called on Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to issue an official and public apology for his damaging comments regarding the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

He said that Muhyiddin’s recent comments during the campaign for the Nenggiri by-election had generated negative perceptions and cast doubts over the capabilities of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as Head of State, whose powers were enshrined in the Federal Constitution under Article 40(2) and Article 43(2).

"UMNO Youth expresses its disappointment with Tan Sri Muhyiddin's statement regarding the role played by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, (Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah), in appointing Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister after the 15th General Election.

"UMNO Youth extends its gratitude to the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang (Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah), for his firm directive, urging the Royal Malaysia Police to take strict action," he said in a statement today.

Akmal also questioned whether Muhyiddin’s statement was made with the consensus and representation of the PN leadership, which includes PAS, Bersatu, and Gerakan.

Muhyiddin has been accused of making a statement that questioned the duties and role of Al-Sultan Abdullah during his tenure as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Earlier, Tengku Hassanal expressed his displeasure and disappointment with Muhyiddin’s statement and directed the police to take uncompromising action against the Pagoh MP.

Muhyiddin's speech has also led to numerous police reports being lodged by various parties.
