N.Sembilan Local Councils Need To Be More Aggressive In Enforcing Plastic Bag Ban - Exco

SEREMBAN, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The Negeri Sembilan state government is urging local councils to be more aggressive in enforcing the single-use plastic bag, polystyrene and straw ban on business license owners.

Negeri Sembilan Local Government Development, Housing and Transport Committee chairman Arul Kumar said that the long period for the awareness campaign, which began on Oct 5, 2022, was adequate and urged local councils to step up enforcement action, including issuing compounds immediately and revoking business licenses of those caught violating license terms.

“Enforcement should include hawkers and night market traders. The single-use plastic bag ban was issued a long time ago and each local council has been ordered to conduct campaigns and include the ban in the conditions of business licenses.

"They can only supply biodegradable plastic bags or other types of bags - cloth, paper or net and no charge can be imposed on customers for this type of plastic bags. If charged, customers can complain to the local council for further action,” he told reporters after inspecting checks on single-use plastic bag compliance at a supermarket here today.

He added that all licenced businesses need to implement the order immediately as local council enforcement officers have begun more comprehensive and aggressive enforcement.

A total of 1,152 reminder notices have been issued throughout the state since 2022, with 14 compounds issued by the Seremban City Council from June to July this year, he said, adding that awareness campaigns and clear briefings on social media, buntings, advertisements and other suitable methods were used since Oct 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023.
