Maxis Showcases 5G-advanced, Revolutionises SUKMA 2024 Spectators Experience

SIBU, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- Maxis is revolutionising the sports spectator experience through technologies such as Smart Watching and Smart AI Analytics, enabled by Maxis 5G-Advanced, which is being showcased at SUKMA 2024.

Compared with 5G technology, 5G-Advanced is up to 10 times faster (with download speeds reaching up to 10Gbps and upload speeds of 1Gbps), can connect up to 10 times more devices, and is five times more responsive (with latency below 10 milliseconds).

Deployed for the SUKMA 2024 showcase at the Sibu Indoor Stadium, the venue for the badminton event, the 5G-Advanced Peak User Speed achieved via the Maxis 5G-Advanced network was around 9.2Gbps.

“Today in Sibu, Sarawak we are showcasing two use cases. Number one is the Smart Watching where 360 degrees spherical videos are captured via 60 high-definition cameras installed around the hall,” said Maxis Acting Chief Technology Strategy Officer Tan Cheng Peng.

Smart Watching enhances the viewing experience by offering multi-angle perspectives and the ability to freeze and capture special moments, turning them into short video clips that elevate how fans engage with their favourite sports.

“The 360° camera captures every rapid movement from multiple angles, allowing viewers to fully appreciate the speed, skill, and reflexes involved. The ultra-low latency and high upload speeds of Maxis 5G-Advanced network enable live 4Kvideo feed transmission,” he said.

“Number two is Smart Al Analytics. We are using Al-driven cameras to profile crowd demographics (age, gender, unique count/crowd size) which help organisers better understand the audience,” he explained.

It also monitors crowd density and flow in real-time, helping event organisers manage congestion and improve safety apart from analysing crowd movement patterns to predict potential bottlenecks or overcrowded zones, enabling pre-emptive actions like adjusting entry/exit points or redirecting foot traffic.

Tan said the collected data and insights can be used to plan future events by understanding crowd preferences, peak times, and movement patterns, helping organisers optimise layouts, staffing and amenities.

“Similar technology has been applied in Paris Olympic 2024 recently. This could potentially guide the blueprint of future events like the 2027 SEA Games, which Sarawak aims to co-host,” he added.

He said 5G-Advanced can help Malaysia advance in economy by staying more competitive where it can be applied to smart manufacturing, logistics and as well as smart city, healthcare and also education.

Maxis will continue to work with all the stakeholders to bring the technology forward to the mainstream and is ready to roll it out in Malaysia if given the opportunity.
