BETONG, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- Terengganu weightlifter Muhammad Izzan Ismadi broke the national record for clean & jerk en route to winning the gold medal in the men’s 96-kilogramme (kg) category at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) here today.

The 21-year-old lifted 173kg in the clean & jerk to erase the old mark of 170kg set by Terengganu’s Muhammad Syahir Tera last year.

Muhammad Izzan also lifted 140 kg in snatch for a total lift of 313kg at the Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan Sports Hall here.

“I worked hard and am proud because my dream came true. I had set my sights on breaking the record today,” he told reporters after the medal presentation ceremony here.

He also dedicated his gold medal to everyone who had helped and supported him.

Abdila Iyad Abdul Jalil of Federal Territories won the men’s 96kg silver medal with a total lift of 309kg while Sabah’s Muhammad Alianafiah took bronze with 262kg.

Meanwhile, in the men’s over 96kg category, Pahang got their first gold medal in weightlifting through Muhammad Faris Haikal Kamarul, who came out tops with a 300kg total lift.

Sarawak’s Samuel Franklyn Edward (262kg) took silver and Perak’s Mohamad Farid Izwan Nor Azizol Hamdan (235kg) settled for bronze.
